Customer: What is this here? (Pointing to the words Char-grilled Italian Vegetables)
Me: They're Italian vegetables: peppers, courgettes, aubergines... you know...
Customer: No. What do you mean?
Me: Italian vegetables...
Customer: (Angrily) I DON'T KNOW WHAT ITALIAN VEGETABLES ARE: I'M JEWISH!
Me: Uh, okay... Peppers. (Pointing at a basket of peppers)
Customer: I KNOW WHAT PEPPERS ARE.
This exchange really confused me. What difference does it make to her ability to recognise vegetables what her religion is.
